Padmore Excels in 25hr Fun Cup at Spa

12th July 2010

British racing driver Nick Padmore was more than happy with the result he and the Richmond Racing team bagged in the VW Fun Cup 25hr at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. In a field of over 120 cars he and team mates Austin Reynolds, Austin Kinsella, Richard Ince and Mark Owen finished in 11th place and also won the race against the other entries competing from the UK championship.

Having had a few mechanical dramas in practice Reigate's Padmore managed to get the car in 66th position on the grid and made the most of his stint as the lights went out for the rolling start. By the time he handed the car over at the first scheduled pit stop he had gained enough ground to be in P2 in the UK race, and running 5th overall.

The race had to be temporarily stopped mid-way through due to an electric storm with fears that the fuel pumps in the pitlane could ignite. However the race was soon declared safe to resume and the team continued with steady stints throughout the night.

By Sunday morning the car had dropped to P18 overall but was still a serious contender for UK class honours which Padmore managed to snatch in his final stint before handing over to Owen, who took the chequered flag for the final 1hr 30mins in a well deserved 11th place, taking the class win.

"This is a great result and I'm delighted to be on the top step of the podium with these guys", said Padmore. All the drivers and everyone at Richmond Racing did a fantastic job this weekend so we got the result we deserved.

"The two Austin's, Richard and I got P2 in the car at Silverstone two weekends ago so it's fantastic that we've managed to go one better against some 120 other cars. It didn't come without its dramas though, and we had to change the brake pads for the last 4 hours but we got there in the end.

"Although the rest of the team have, I haven't competed in Fun Cup 25hr in two years and this has been our highest overall classification to date so I'd like to thank and congratulate everyone in the team and the other drivers."
